All roads lead to Rome

We got up early (AGAIN..... This is not a sleeping in type holiday) and headed into Rome for the day. It was a Sunday morning which proved to be lucky as there were less people around, at first anyway!
Our first stop was Vatican City and St Peter's Basilica. Having arrived so early we didn't have to line up and just waltzed right in.
So here is Zadok and Wendy striking a pose (I think he is improving), St Peter's is in the background. This is St Peter's square and those of you who follow Catholic goings on or have read Angels and Demons will be familiar with the square and the Egyptian Obelisk in the centre.
I have lots of photos from the inside but they are not that great. These are the famous pillars that surround the square. The top floor of the building behind is the Pope's residence, he wasn't in when we were there. The other photo is the grave of the last Pope. The Vatican was absolutly amazing. Inside every single bit of wall and ceiling space is covered with frescoes and ornate marble carvings. Every ledge has a statue. The sheer scale of the place is hard to take in.
Next we went to the Catacombs which were quite amazing, no photos sorry. Then to the Colosseum.
We were just walking down towards the Colosseum when we heard someone yelling Wendy, Wendy! And there was our friend Amber from Dubai!
We had to take a photo of course. Amber was in Rome on business but squeezing in a few days of pleasure aswell.
It is amazing to be walking amoungst all these ancient ruins that you have seen and heard about all your life.
We saw so much in Rome, I cant describe it all. I'll just put the pictures and you can try and imagine!
The Spanish Steps.
Trevi Fountain, and my lovely husband who is throwing a coin in so he will one day come back to Rome, with me I hope!
The Panthenon, and my 25 year old hand touching the 2000 year old rock.
Here is Bee eating a crepe, or if you are in France (which we weren't) then you must ask for a 'Chocolate Crap', as that is how the French pronounce crepe.... Highly amusing. I have forgotten the name of this square and I don't have my book with me, any takers? It also featured in Angels and Demons.
From here it was back to the hotel to watch Italy take out the world cup, then off to bed.
The next day we got up REALLY early and grabbed a breakfast bag to eat while we were waiting in line at Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel...
No photos inside, and I don't think they would do it justice anyway. This was an amazing experience... The lines were so long. They went on forever. As we were so early and in a group we didn't have to wait too long.
That was Rome! Absolutely amazing, breathtaking and awe inspiring. Back on the bus ready to head North to Venice. Pheww!!!!
Blogging from: Hobart, staying with Rach and Ed. Hanging round here for awhile I think!!!!
